ASP.NET Web Forms

Announcement: This forum has been replaced by Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. You can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas in the Visual Studio Developer Community.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of ASP.NET, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Make Login Controls work with ASP.NET Identity by default or provide alternative controls that integrate with ASP.NET Identity

    It seems like your new identity framework does not integrate with Web Forms controls. Please add support to existing controls or create new controls that integrate with ASP.NET identity without additional boilerplate code.

    • Make the System.Web.UI.INonBindingContainer interface public

      I need to implement the INonBindingContainer interface on my custom controls for the same reason that standard controls do (so that data binding expressions work properly on naming containers that aren't binding containers), but this currently isn't possible because the interface is currently marked internal.

      • Provide a URL authorization API

        This will allow programmatic configuration of the authorization controlling access to URLs, rather than having to specify the rules at design time in the Web.config

        • EntityDataSource to use the the DbContext

          Change the EntityDataSource to use the DbContext instead of the ObjectContext.
          Web Forms EntityDataSource is based on the ObjectContext. The Entity Framework designer no longer creates a context derived from ObjectContext but instead from DbContext. I've seen Web Forms as a technology to use drag&drop to create simple Web applications. This is no longer the case. It's required to add some code to make the EntityDataSource work. With EF6 it's also not possible to change the code generation of the designer back to ObjectContext. Of course, now it is possible to add some code to make the EntityDataSource work again,…

          • Don't use Page.InitComplete in QueryableFilterRepeater and DynamicFilter controls

            ASP.NET Dynamic Data QueryableFilterRepeter and DynamicFilter controls currently use Page.InitComplete logic to dynamically generate their content. This prevents you from re-using these controls on a custom filter template to generate filters for a related (parent or child) table. By the time the custom filter template is initialized the Page.InitComplete has already fired and the controls simply don't work.

            • Implement true page life per session

              ASP.NET specifically:

              I have recently been developing some server controls, and let me tell you: Efficient Memory Management is nearly impossible to achieve on the framework... And for one simple reason:

              Developers cannot catch a true page's life without going to extremes like creating your own HTTPModule to catch a request, play with it, and then redirect. Not only that, but the HTTPModule can't even interact with the Application code...

              The most explicit example of this comes from some recent work i've been doing developing a custom grid control. Basically, the developer asked me this:

              Can you make a grid…

              • Make IsRequired of ConfigurationPropertyAttribute apply to elements as well

                Currently, in ConfigurationSection-derived class, you can specify configuration property as requited by setting IsRequired=true in [ConfigurationProperty]. This works only for common properties, not for child elements and there is no way to force child elements declaratively.

                • Make encoding of Page.Title, Page.MetaKeywords and Page.MetaDescription equivalent

                  Typically when you are setting one of these properties dynamically, you will set all of them. The encoding of them is inconsistent which could easily lead to people forgetting to encode something.

                  Page.Title is NOT encoded

                  Page.MetaKeywords and Page.MetaDescription ARE encoded

                  • Refresh Health Monitoring

                    Just like the .NET Universal Providers for Membership, Roles, and Profile, I think the Health Monitoring story could use some love. Particularly when it comes to configuration and extensibility. A more code-based configuration API would be nice, and a clean way to extend the events model also.

                    • ASP.NET WebForms: ClientIDMode enum lacks "NoID" value. We need possibility to turn off ClientID rendering in places where we dont need it.

                      In 90% cases for labels/panels and other non post-back controls we need server ID to access control on server side but never use its ClientID. If project has big controls nesting - these dummy ClientIDs become noticeable issue and increase client HTML size a lot.

                      Here is existing solution: http://clientidless.codeplex.com/

                      But it could be much better to support such obvious feature natively.

                      • Enable databinding in every postback event, not only in databound controls

                        I like the new Databinding functionality in webforms, but it's limited to the databound controls. Wouldn't it be nice if every control that causes a postback had a "PostbackMethod" property (like the "SelectMethod" property on the databound controls). This method would then be called during postback with parameters bound using ValueProviders.

                        I know this might be achieved with a formview, but that's somewhat limited if you want to do more than just CRUD.

                        Oh, and just opensource the whole webforms stack, while you're at it :D

                        • Allow for Add, Delete or Update of Script References in ScriptManager

                          Would like to have the ability to add, remove or update a script reference in the script manager, both at asp.net web page as well as code behind, such that the consolidated list, after reconciling the above, should be the ones rendered to the page or used for bundling and minification.

                          The reason for this request is, I have a scenario, where I might need a script based on the availability of data. If data is not present, I do not need the javascript to be added. But if it is required, I would need the script to be added.

                                  the ASP.NET Menu control creates a small Javascript part which interfere with JQM, The menuitems are limited in with

                                  I have a Workaround <script type="text/javascript"> Sys.WebForms.Menu = "";</script>
                                  but would be better not to render the Java Script.
                                  In general 1st choice would be a WYSIWIG support for JQM
                                  2nd best choice is to have a "externalJS=true" and disable all JS

                                    • dynamicvalidator JavaScript ValidatorValidate

                                      The dynamicvalidator control seems have a bug in Client side script. When reading the control validators, the dynamic isvalid is always true and errormessage is empty. I have no idea why

                                      sample code
                                      var proxied = window.ValidatorValidate;

                                      window.ValidatorValidate = function () {
                                      var result = proxied.apply(this, arguments);
                                      onAfter(arguments);
                                      };

                                      var onAfter = function (args) {
                                      var control = document.getElementById(args[0].controltovalidate)

                                      var validators = control.Validators;
                                      var isValid = true;

                                      for (var i = 0; i < validators.length; i++) {
                                      if (!validators[i].isvalid) {
                                      isValid = false;
                                      break;
                                      }
                                      }

                                        • Force JQuery via ScriptResourceDefinition on all pages

                                          Unobtrusive validation for web forms works great, but, only when validation controls are added to a form.
                                          For other pages that lack validation controls, no reference to the JQuery file is rendered. This causes a conflict on pages that manually have a JQuery reference, as documented at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25791481/load-scriptresourcedefinition-jquery-on-every-page and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/21467942/how-do-i-make-scriptresourcedefinition-load-on-all-pages-instead-of-automaticall?lq=1
                                          Can this be address so that we can force ScriptResourceDefinition to load JQuery regardless of whether validation occurs on a page?
