General ASP.NET

Announcement: This forum has been replaced by Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. You can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas in the Visual Studio Developer Community.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of ASP.NET, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The ASP.NET Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Add dynamics support for AppSettings and ConnectionStrings in ConfigurationManager

ConfigurationManager (and/or WebConfigurationManager) could have a really cool dynamics implementation, whereby they returned singleton instances when doing something like WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings.LocalSqlServer, which could return a type-specific instance of a SqlClient connection to my given connection string.

  3. You've gone a long way with VS SQL support ... Now, we need much better support for Azure Table Storage

We need help in reducing the amount of time to code for Azure Table Storage and deal with table storage in the IDE. I'd like to see and modify entities and tables right from the IDE ... building the functionality of software like ClumsyLeaf's TableXplorer right into VS. Also, it would be nice to have more/better support in data source controls and data-bound controls for table storage data and keys. It's all very LOW level right now and takes quite a while to code for Azure Table Storage relative to coding against SQL/SQL Azure storage. [Also, btw ... can you…

  4. Allow clearing of client ScrollPosition value as a Page Method

There is currently no server-side way to clear the values set by the Page.MaintainScrollPositionOnPostback property.

The only way to "reset" the client scroll position is a messy javascript injection hack. Can a method be included to clear the scroll position, e.g.
    Page.ClearScrollPosition
    Page.ClearScrollPositionX
    Page.ClearScrollPositionY

Alternative can the internal method LoadScrollPosition (
    http://referencesource.microsoft.com/#System.Web/xsp/system/Web/UI/Page.cs#4f5017a57b4c846d) be overrideable?

  5. Incorporate "Fluent Design" controls into ASP.NET Web Apps

Current web apps require a significant amount of customization to make them look modern. Imitating the functionality of the new WIndows 10 apps should be built into ASP.NET. Expensive products like Telerik are flourishing from this shortcoming. With the introduction of more fluently designed Windows apps, it would be helpful to give developers the tools to design apps like those in the demos.

  7. extend User control to easy integrante with Bind, eval, etc.

Allow the VS Community 17, to generate "simple" server controls. Allowing bind / eval events, etc. in an easy way. and generate them as dll so you can share them.
O, .... something like extending the user controls (ascx) allowing bindearlos to data, to place them within Gridviews, formviews, etc ..

  8. New ASP.NET Core Web App - Breaks when Update Nuget Packages

When I create a brand new project and go to "manage nuget packages" I see that I have 15-16 updates. I've not touched a single line of code at all whatsoever. If I update all of those nuget packages... I can no longer work with the project as it breaks and if I had written any code, all broken. I get the errors, "Cannot find runtim target for framework '.NETCoreApp, Version=v1.0' compatible with one of the target runtimes: etc." & 1. The project has not been restored or restore failed - run 'dotnet restore' & 2. The project does not…

  13. Region Support for ASPX File

I hope in aspx file can use region like this

    <%--#region test--%>
    <div>
    <table></table>
    </div>
    <%--#endregion--%>

and can collapse the region the same as region in cs file.

  14. incomplete/unanswered threads marked resolved

this is for the asp.net website.
i too often see threads with incorrect/incomplete answers marked as resolved and cannot have the correct answer posted because thread is locked. asp.net website cannot be taken as a serious resource for answers, that is a shame. as its domain name and direct affiliation with microsoft should mean its an authority for the best answers.

  15. allow overriding of the text element behavior

I use a Razor partial view to generate some SVG content. <text> is a valid SVG element. trying to get Razor to actually spit out that element was ridiculously hard using escapes. Also, if I reformatted the document it would break those escapes because of the line breaks.

Please consider for example a directive that tells the parser not to handle <text> elements or perhaps simply detecting attributes on the element and turning off the behavior. i.e. if a <text> element has attributes, they must not want it to be a Razor multi-line content block.

    Also, I have been hearing…

  16. Provide a more helpful message for viewstate exceptions

If you've ever received the following message, you know it takes FOREVER to track down the source:

Failed to load viewstate. The control tree into which viewstate is being loaded must match the control tree that was used to save viewstate during the previous request. For example, when adding controls dynamically, the controls added during a post-back must match the type and position of the controls added during the initial request.

I would like to propose that the exception message include the UniqueID of the control that failed to restore ViewState so the problem spot in the control tree can…

  18. C# to JavaScript with AJAX, Client/Server Pure C# coding support

Prerequisite for this idea is first have C# to JavaScript conversion (I think this is already out like bridge.net). The goal is keep all code base in C# and be able to put both client and server side functionality in single class (viewmodel).

In ViewModel Class definition, use compiler directive to denote if the whole class or part of it is available in client side as well. e.g. [Available: Client|Server, Compatiblity: JavaScript]

Now, this class will work on server side just like it works now in MVC project to handle any server side activity and bindings to Razor/CSHTML code.

    Plus,…

  19. Allow the relocation of projects from a solution folder

If you create a project which has an associated project with it but then you want to add in another project but want the solution to now be a level up, as soon as you move the solution, the project cannot be found. You can remove the project and re-add it, when ideally you would right click on a project and tell VS where the project now exists - normally just a level down.

  20. Web Deploy - Speed up FTP deployment

When deploying a website using FTP it's very slow compared to other FTP applications. Web Deploy should be using more than 1 connection while uploading files. Bonus points for being able to retry uploading a previously failed file.
