  1. Make it easier to configure Web Publish Profiles

I'd like to see a GUI for some MSBuild/Web Publish Target settings like: folder permissions (ACLs), blocking a folder from being overridden (e.g. upload folder containing user files), easy site backup before publish (to a zip file probably), etc.

Hi Dirk, I think this is a great idea. If you don’t already know the publish profiles are now stored as a part of your project under Properties\PublishProfiles. For this I was thinking that it would be good to have an editor for all the advanced properties if you double click the file.

The only thing that I’m not sure of is how many people would be interested in using this functionality. If we can get a good amount of votes on this item then I can use that to justify the work.

  2. Enable scheduled tasks

It would be great to have a way to do scheduled tasks/jobs. If I want some job to run regularly I know I can always create a separate console that can be called by Windows Task Scheduler. However it would be much neater in term of deployment for this feature to be available within the asp.net project, without having to change the system configuration. The asp.net project would be self-contained and when deployed, IIS would run the background task based on some settings defined in web.config.

Azure added WebJobs, which is effectively doing that. So this doesn't look like an…

Take a look at HostingEnvironment.QueueBackgroundWorkItem which lets you do background tasks. It’s a start.

  3. msajaxbundle and webformsbundle.js

Please make msajaxbundle.js and WebFormsBundle.js for asp.net version 4.6 available on the asp.net ajax cdn.

    Just like these: https://ajax.aspnetcdn.com/ajax/4.5/6/MsAjaxBundle.js, https://ajax.aspnetcdn.com/ajax/4.5/6/WebFormsBundle.js

  4. Bundles should be able to return binary output (for image sprites etc.)

It would be really cool if the BundleResponse class was able to return binary content instead of just text content. This way it would be possible to create image bundles (sprites).

  5. use package management console to add scaffolding item

I would be great to be able to add scaffold items by running a command in the package console like Add-Controller -model:Person -views:All -context:MyDataContext -useansyc

Or something similar to that. I have used the MvcScaffolding nuget package and it was on the right track but appears it is going by the way side. This some functionality should be include in VS out of the box.

  6. Add a contextual menu option to navigate to the related *.ascx file

If you're using *.ascx controls that you've created in your pages, it would be nice to be have a one click way to navigate to its definition instead of noting its name and looking for it in your solution explorer (especially for large projects).

There are other enhancements that would be nice such as automatically adding the @Register tag if the control is located in the current project.

  7. Productivity - Move Type To Its Own File

When VS detects that a type exists in a file that is named for another type in the same file, present a glyph (ctrl+.) that can be used to move the type to a new file named for that type.

  9. Add 'Publish Files' context menu item to files in pending changes window

In the pending changes window it would be great if I could select the files, right-click and select 'publish files' from the context menu.

This would open the publish dialog as normal and I could publish just the files that have changed.

  10. Able to store session data both in inproc and out of process, similar to mixed mode session support.

It will be great if we can store session data both in inproc and out of process by an application similar to mixed mode session support. So that only crutial session data will be persisted out of process and some non crutial or temp ( depending on situation ) can be stored in InProc.

This support will be utilized by non web farm or web garden architecture.

  11. WebDeploy: Make use of zlib and use compression!!

One by one file copying is a dealbreaker. Please opt for zlib to compress the whole package, push the tarball, untar it on target and post the result back at once. We don't need one by one file transfer status.

At least provide an option for it, if people are dumb enough to realize what they don't need! It takes us MINUTES to publish the dam thing on our staging from other country.

zlib (http://zlib.net/) is used by the whole non-Microsoft world. Node and many other platforms and open software make use of it. It compiles fine on…

Thank you for pointing this out, we will review. WebDeploy development is currently very limited so we may not be able to address right away.

  13. Make SecUtility and other utility classes public rather than internal sealed

I'm trying to build my own role provider for ASP.NET that supports nested hierarchies for roles - like Active Directory, but SQL-based (as an LDAP server is somewhat overkill for my needs, and yes I've seen the new stuff about Windows Azure AD services).

Having reflected (using ILSpy) the deault SqlRoleProvider to keep my code almost identical, I find that most of the classes utilised in there, such as System.Web.Util.SecUtility for parameter checking, System.Web.DataAccess.SqlConnectionHolder for attaching a SQL connection to an HttpContext for application re-use, and System.Web.SR for string resources, are all marked as internal (and in some instances sealed),…

  14. Add better support for ConfigurationManager's ability to modify web.config

WebConfigurationManager (and ConfigurationManager) throw exceptions when trying to load a web.config in anything less than High Trust environments. The sole reason for this being that the local web.config is merged all the way down from the machine-level web.configs, via any parent applications in IIS.

Better idea: put all inherited configs into a read-only dictionary at runtime (rather than putting the ConfigurationManager settings into a dictionary, which is what actually happens, therefore preventing writing back of a .config file to disk after modifying a setting). When the web.config is loaded at runtime, take the inherited settings dictionaries, apply them to the…

  15. Add dynamics support for AppSettings and ConnectionStrings in ConfigurationManager

ConfigurationManager (and/or WebConfigurationManager) could have a really cool dynamics implementation, whereby they returned singleton instances when doing something like WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings.LocalSqlServer, which could return a type-specific instance of a SqlClient connection to my given connection string.

  16. You've gone a long way with VS SQL support ... Now, we need much better support for Azure Table Storage

We need help in reducing the amount of time to code for Azure Table Storage and deal with table storage in the IDE. I'd like to see and modify entities and tables right from the IDE ... building the functionality of software like ClumsyLeaf's TableXplorer right into VS. Also, it would be nice to have more/better support in data source controls and data-bound controls for table storage data and keys. It's all very LOW level right now and takes quite a while to code for Azure Table Storage relative to coding against SQL/SQL Azure storage. [Also, btw ... can you…

  17. Allow clearing of client ScrollPosition value as a Page Method

There is currently no server-side way to clear the values set by the Page.MaintainScrollPositionOnPostback property.

The only way to "reset" the client scroll position is a messy javascript injection hack. Can a method be included to clear the scroll position, e.g.
    Page.ClearScrollPosition
    Page.ClearScrollPositionX
    Page.ClearScrollPositionY

Alternative can the internal method LoadScrollPosition (
    http://referencesource.microsoft.com/#System.Web/xsp/system/Web/UI/Page.cs#4f5017a57b4c846d) be overrideable?

  19. Multiline parameters code format (Ctrl+k,Ctrl+d)

In MVC 4 project open App_Start\RouteConfig.cs file and paste the following:

    routes.MapRoute(
    name: "MyName",
    url: "MyName/{action}/{id}",
    defaults: new { action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional }
    );

You will notice the multi-lined parameter list is not formatted correctly (with 4 space indentation bias). Pressing Ctrl+K,Ctrl+D won't work either.

  20. Don't leave IE script debugging enabled after debugging an ASP.NET site

It seems that when debugging an ASP.NET site in IE, Visual Studio automatically turns on IE's script debugging setting.
I assume that this is needed in order for Visual Studio to hook into the JavaScript engine and allow debugging JavaScript in VS.

However, when I am done testing my site, I will be out browsing the web and get constantly interrupted with dialog boxes telling me about errors occurring in the pages I am visiting - pages where these error messages have no meaning to me whatsoever.
Getting rid of these boxes essentially requires two clicks - one to check…
