General ASP.NET

Announcement: This forum has been replaced by Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. You can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas in the Visual Studio Developer Community.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of ASP.NET, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The ASP.NET Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  2. Show me the parts of my .config files that I can delete

    As projects grow and transition from greenfield to brownfield projects .config files are getting more and more obsolete and dead stuff in them.

    Do help me and show me what I delete of this.

  3. Bundles should be able to return binary output (for image sprites etc.)

    It would be really cool if the BundleResponse class was able to return binary content instead of just text content. This way it would be possible to create image bundles (sprites).

  4. You've gone a long way with VS SQL support ... Now, we need much better support for Azure Table Storage

    We need help in reducing the amount of time to code for Azure Table Storage and deal with table storage in the IDE. I'd like to see and modify entities and tables right from the IDE ... building the functionality of software like ClumsyLeaf's TableXplorer right into VS. Also, it would be nice to have more/better support in data source controls and data-bound controls for table storage data and keys. It's all very LOW level right now and takes quite a while to code for Azure Table Storage relative to coding against SQL/SQL Azure storage. [Also, btw ... can you…

  5. make the generate resources wizard generate resources for usercontrols that have properties marked with localizable

    Currently it is impossible to get the wizard to generate resources (or the meta:resource attribute) for usercontrols. If you manually placed in the resource location, and manually placing a meta:resource attribute on the usercontrol, it works just fine. The wizard should treat usercontrols the same as the built-in asp.net controls in this regard.

  7. Refactoring for local URLs in hyperlinks

    VS seems to be the only web site IDE that doesn't refactor HREF links to local pages, when those pages are moved or renamed. I understand this might only be possible for non-server rendered controls or static HTML pages, but why completely ignore the other scenarios? I create thousands of pages of documentation in static HTML for compiled HTML help (CHM files) and am forced to use Dreamweaver.

  8. Make enrypting the connection strings easier to do during deployment

    right now you have to run aspnet_regiis to encrypt the connection strings in a web.config. It would be nice to this could be built in as a part of the deploy process.

  10. Productivity - Move Type To Its Own File

    When VS detects that a type exists in a file that is named for another type in the same file, present a glyph (ctrl+.) that can be used to move the type to a new file named for that type.

  11. Allow the relocation of projects from a solution folder

    If you create a project which has an associated project with it but then you want to add in another project but want the solution to now be a level up, as soon as you move the solution, the project cannot be found. You can remove the project and re-add it, when ideally you would right click on a project and tell VS where the project now exists - normally just a level down.

  12. Support Script# and give us an answer to the Google Web Toolkit.

    I would love to use Script# similar to how Google Web Toolkit works. Your Javascript story is still pretty weak in terms of allowing us to easily make complicated AJAX applications.

  13. Multiple web.config Transforms

    The ability to specify multiple web.config Transforms; all of them applies and final web.config gets created out of them. And then couple of item templates to add specific transform...e-g

    web.config
    release-ajax-transform
    release-dynamic-data-transform
    debug-ajax-transform
    debug-dynamic-data-transform

  15. Add something like webrat or capybara in ruby to allow for testing web apps without the browser

    I'd like to see functionality similar to webrat or capybara in Rails that allows you to write end to end tests (aside from javascript of course) for a web app without actually running a browser

  16. Add a contextual menu option to navigate to the related *.ascx file

    If you're using *.ascx controls that you've created in your pages, it would be nice to be have a one click way to navigate to its definition instead of noting its name and looking for it in your solution explorer (especially for large projects).

    There are other enhancements that would be nice such as automatically adding the @Register tag if the control is located in the current project.

  18. extend User control to easy integrante with Bind, eval, etc.

    Allow the VS Community 17, to generate "simple" server controls. Allowing bind / eval events, etc. in an easy way. and generate them as dll so you can share them.
    O, .... something like extending the user controls (ascx) allowing bindearlos to data, to place them within Gridviews, formviews, etc ..

  19. Class property value copier (Mapper) - copy property values from one class to another

    It would be beneficial to be able to copy matching properties from one class to another instead of manually writing out individual assignments

    For example; to copy the matching properties from PersonName to Person ignoring unmatched properties:

    public class Person() {
    public string LastName { get; set; }
    public string FirstName { get; set; }
    public string JobTitle { get; set; }
    }

    public class PersonName() {
    public string LastName { get; set; }
    public string FirstName { get; set; }
    public string Middle Initial { get; set; }
    }

    Instead of this:

    person.LastName = personName.LastName;
    person.FirstName = personName.FirstName;

    Would…
