  1. Show me the parts of my .config files that I can delete

As projects grow and transition from greenfield to brownfield projects .config files are getting more and more obsolete and dead stuff in them.

Do help me and show me what I delete of this.

      • Add the ability to transform Web.Config without rebuilding

Allow Web.Config transforms to be applied to a deployment package without a rebuild under a different configuration.
QA packages can then be converted to production release packages without fear of introducing any subsequent changes.
Add ins exist but would prefer to have built in support

Thanks for the suggestion. If I understand you correctly you want to be able to create a single Web Deploy package and then use that to publish to multiple destinations, including executing the web.config transform?

We are certainly looking at this scenario. I have created a prototype of what this support might look like. I’d love to get your thoughts on it. I’ve created a 5 minute video. You can take a look at http://sedodream.com/2012/03/14/PackageWebUpdatedAndVideoBelow.aspx.

        • Make enrypting the connection strings easier to do during deployment

right now you have to run aspnet_regiis to encrypt the connection strings in a web.config. It would be nice to this could be built in as a part of the deploy process.

            • Provide virtual formatting in editors for XAML, Razor, ASP.NET Web Forms etc.

Declarative languages that are bound to a visual tree are often heavily nested and also tend to be refactored frequently. Maintaining the formatting for these languages can quickly become a chore, even with 'reformat' features.

Virtual formatting lets the editor handle indentation in the same way it handles syntax-coloring. Indentation of text is immediate and fluid as edit operations are completed; text just re-flows when the structure changes, there is no 'reformat' button.

No tabs or spaces are inserted for formatting, indentation is more akin to that of word-processors (but actually a lot smarter).

This video shows virtual formatting in…

I hate the fact that after publishing an asp.net web app, I need to remote into the server and encrypt connection strings and perhaps other sections of my web.config. It would be great if I could automatically kick off a post-deployment script which would do this for me.

                  • Enable ASP.Net scaffolding to generate CRUD data based on another class rather than only EF DbContext

Today ASP.Net project scaffolding only allow you to select a entity model class + Entity Framework DbContext-based class in order to generate the operations on view and controller.

We have a class that we call "Business Layer" that holds the instance of the DbContext EF code-first class. This layer contains all necessary business logic for that specific business domain, including CRUD and validations. We would like to be able to generate scaffold based on this class instead of rather have to point directly to DbContext.

Maybe if ASP.Net MVC has an Interface which basic CRUD operations, it would be able…

                    • Add a contextual menu option to navigate to the related *.ascx file

If you're using *.ascx controls that you've created in your pages, it would be nice to be have a one click way to navigate to its definition instead of noting its name and looking for it in your solution explorer (especially for large projects).

There are other enhancements that would be nice such as automatically adding the @Register tag if the control is located in the current project.

                      • make the generate resources wizard generate resources for usercontrols that have properties marked with localizable

Currently it is impossible to get the wizard to generate resources (or the meta:resource attribute) for usercontrols. If you manually placed in the resource location, and manually placing a meta:resource attribute on the usercontrol, it works just fine. The wizard should treat usercontrols the same as the built-in asp.net controls in this regard.

                            • add intellisense support for DynamicControl's DataField property when used with ItemType

                              • use package management console to add scaffolding item

I would be great to be able to add scaffold items by running a command in the package console like Add-Controller -model:Person -views:All -context:MyDataContext -useansyc

Or something similar to that. I have used the MvcScaffolding nuget package and it was on the right track but appears it is going by the way side. This some functionality should be include in VS out of the box.

                                • When updating project.json by the NuGet package manager the order should be preserved

When updating packages in project.json by using the NuGet package manager in Visual Studio the order of the dependencies in project.json are changed.

It would be helpful if the order could be preserved.
Both when reviewing what has changed and to reduce the risk of merge conflicts when merging project.json files.

                                  • Multiline parameters code format (Ctrl+k,Ctrl+d)

In MVC 4 project open App_Start\RouteConfig.cs file and paste the following:

                                    routes.MapRoute(
                                    name: "MyName",
                                    url: "MyName/{action}/{id}",
                                    defaults: new { action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional }
                                    );

You will notice the multi-lined parameter list is not formatted correctly (with 4 space indentation bias). Pressing Ctrl+K,Ctrl+D won't work either.

                                    • Don't leave IE script debugging enabled after debugging an ASP.NET site

It seems that when debugging an ASP.NET site in IE, Visual Studio automatically turns on IE's script debugging setting.
I assume that this is needed in order for Visual Studio to hook into the JavaScript engine and allow debugging JavaScript in VS.

However, when I am done testing my site, I will be out browsing the web and get constantly interrupted with dialog boxes telling me about errors occurring in the pages I am visiting - pages where these error messages have no meaning to me whatsoever.
Getting rid of these boxes essentially requires two clicks - one to check…

                                      • ability to see pop up preview of parent container name in long less nesting code like Webstorm

when you have a long nested rules in .less files it is pain currently to know what is the current css rule when you click on ending bracket.

in web storm when you put the mouse on the end bracket of any rule and its starting bracket is out of screen, webstorm will show you a pop preview of the name of that rule.

                                        here is an image preview

                                        • Refactoring for local URLs in hyperlinks

VS seems to be the only web site IDE that doesn't refactor HREF links to local pages, when those pages are moved or renamed. I understand this might only be possible for non-server rendered controls or static HTML pages, but why completely ignore the other scenarios? I create thousands of pages of documentation in static HTML for compiled HTML help (CHM files) and am forced to use Dreamweaver.
