How can we improve WCF?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

    • Processing long requests

      WCF should allow processing long requests easily.

      • WCF and hardware load balanacers

        Many enterprises are now using hardware load balancers, and WCF via http is a pain to configure and use when behind a load balancer. Implemented solutions is non-secure and most if not all of the security features of WCF needs to be disabled

        • Make a Push Notification model easy (1 client; many services)

          While its technically possible, its painfully hard to implement for many reasons.

          1. Attributes on the contract are static and can't be changed at run-time. So if one of the services has a different security model or a different Action or namespace, the only way to change this is to rewrite the xml before it goes out the door. (Assuming I give out the same interface to all services; notification destination.) There needs to be a better way to implement Push Notifications in a SOAP world.

          2. The contract should be a little more dynamic so that push notifications can…

          • Provide base classes to help when writing implementations of IChannelFactory and IChannelListener

            Sometimes I need to create a custom BindingElement to accomplish some task where the simpler extension points won't be sufficient. It takes an awful-lot of boilerplate code to do this, even when the amount of work I'm trying to achieve is minimal.

            • Add support to view/modify Soap headers

              When working with web services, to view or modify the SOAP headers requires a whole bunch of work. Why not had a beforeSend event that can be used to dump (or modify) the soap contents. And a afterReceive event that allows me to view the raw SOAP that comes from the server.

              I know this can be done, but it takes a ton of code and trying to find any examples that work, have all the necessary details, etc. is incredibly difficult to do.

                • Custom binding full control

                  Custom binding should allow full control over the binding configuration. For example at the moment I cannot make w secure dual channel binding that supports compression.

                  • Support ISet

                    It'd be nice if we can describe, in the SOAP interface, that a method's return value is unordered and cannot contain duplicates.

                    Currently, if a method returns an ISet, it causes SerializationException on the server side when a HashSet is returned, and it causes Add Service Reference to give an "object" typed property.

                        • Add support for Apache Thrift

                          The point of WCF (in my mind) is to provide a platform and protocol independent method of communication. Adding support for Apache Thrift furthers this goal.

                          • Add interface to access to properties and methods of ClientBase<TChannel> that are not depend on TChannel type parameter.

                            It would be good to have intermediate interface like

                            public interface IClientBase : ICommunicationObject
                            {
                            ClientCredentials ClientCredentials { get; }
                            ServiceEndpoint Endpoint { get; }
                            ...
                            }

                            and ClientBase<TChannel> definition as

                            public abstract class ClientBase<TChannel> : IClientBase, IDisposable where TChannel : class

                            This will allow to write common methods for any client like

                            void SetupClientCredentials(IClientBase client)
                            {
                            client.ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName = someUserName;
                            client.ClientCredentials.UserName.Password = somePassword;
                            }

                              • Please add support for WCF Transactions (and other binding types) to Silverlight

                                MSDN docs say: "More advanced bindings and binding elements, such as the ones dealing with queues, reliable sessions, transactions, message-level security (such as WS-Security), peer-to-peer messaging, and transports other than HTTP, HTTPS, and TCP are not provided in Silverlight 4."

                                Can we please at least have support for Transactions?
                                Thanks

                                • OperationContractAttribute.WrapperNamespace

                                  Two reasons:
                                  1. If two services are created under the same xml namespace and they both have an operation with the same name then two types with the same FULLY QUALIFIED NAME would be declared.
                                  I imagine that the default behavior cannot be changed but at least give us a way to change it.
                                  2. In order to avoid the above issue some teams create message types on a different namespace altogether. The current implementation forces the client to use MessageContracts when a simple WrapperNamespace property would solve this and simplify life for many developers.
